Loneliness and depression are two isolating conditions that can have a devastating impact on your daily life and if you are feeling lonely and have feelings of despair, it's important that you consider how you can take the first steps towards positive changes. Sadly, everyone feels the pain of loneliness at some point in their lives, so take comfort that it is often a temporary situation and one shared by many. Loneliness and depression need resolution, they do not just disappear and it is important that you seek out ways to get your life back on track. Taking positive actions help to combat the feelings of isolation and simply by taking action, you will begin to feel more positive.

There are a number of reasons as to why you might feel lonely, for example:

Divorced or separated

If you are newly separated or experiencing the pain of a divorce, it can be difficult to take stock of your emotions and to adapt to life on your own.

Emotional loneliness

You might still be with your partner but feel totally alone. Loneliness within marriage might be common but it can be a stressful time.

Moving to a new area

Moving to a new area can be a tense time especially if you do not really know anyone. Give yourself time to build up new and honest friendships.

Depression

If you are suffering with depression, the very nature of this condition might make you feel isolated or lonely and unable to reach out to others. Seek professional help as soon as possible.

Remember that loneliness and depression invoke emotional turmoil. You might feel tearful, angry, sad or introverted and feel that even the most familiar situations start to feel alien to you, as such, how you perceive life can be distorted and a sense of helplessness is often experienced and these myriad of emotions that fluctuate consistently can lead to a downward spiral if you are not careful.

Lethargy is a common reaction and impacts the drive that could help you resolve the problems. It's important to try to identify the reason why you are in this situation however, before trying a quick fix that may only make the problem worse in the long term. Forcing yourself headlong into a social scene that you are not ready for in a desperate attempt to meet people can result in disaster. Feeling lonely can cause feelings of neediness which in turn sends out a warning beacon to those around. Rushing from relationship to relationship can actually make the loneliness far more acute as each liaison comes to an end.
